The Romanian Chief of Land Forces, Major General Ariton Ionita was awarded the Legion of Merit, Order of Commander by U.S. Army Europe Commander, Lieutenant General Mark Hertling in a ceremony at the Cincu Combat Training Center on Thursday, April 26th. The Legion of Merit is the sixth highest military award from the United States Armed Forces.
Major General Ionita was awarded the Legion of Merit for meritorious service as the Chief of Staff of the Romanian Land Forces. Since assuming command, General Ionita has been directly responsible for leading the Land Forces through comprehensive transformation and modernization program while simultaneously preparing and deploying soldiers for combat in Afghanistan.
As the Chief of Staff, General Ionita has guided the Land Forces in developing the national combat training center into a fully instrumented, multi-purpose, maneuver training area. In addition, he has improved training programs for deployable units and implemented force enablers such as the female engagement teams, unit advisors and route clearance teams.
Major General Ionita has made several trips to Afghanistan to visit with Romanian troops and on one occasion, he met with Lieutenant General Hertling in Zabul Province. The Romanian Land Forces continues to deploy 1,800 troops to the ISAF mission in Afghanistan.
